Child Protection

It is everyone’s responsibility to protect children and young people and to do our best to keep them safe.

The Department of Education and Skills Child Protection Procedures for Primary and Post-Primary schools give clear direction and guidance to school authorities and to school personnel in relation to meeting the statutory obligations under the Children First Act, 2015 and in the continued implementation within the school setting of the best practice guidance set out in the updated Children First: National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children 2017. The procedures apply to all recognised primary and post-primary schools and to all members of school personnel.

UPDATE, November 2021:

An addendum has been added to Children First which outlines an Action Plan for Online Safety. In light of this, changes have been made to the Checklist for Review of the Child Safeguarding Statement. In addition, the four original Mandatory Templates are now three Mandatory Templates. These have been updated on our Child Protection webpage. The Guide to Child Protection and Safeguarding Inspections document has now been updated to refer to three templates. From 31st January, 2022 schools will be required to use the new mandatory templates from the date of their next annual review.
