The current situation in relation to the COVID 19 virus is a particular challenge for school leaders. Although school contexts are different, there are some key themes for school leaders during this time which are brought into focus in the categories below. The PDST Leadership Team has compiled a suite of information and supports that may be useful to school leaders during the current period. These pages can be used to help support and develop the thinking of school leaders at this time and will continue to be developed over the coming period. The PDST Leadership Team advocates a whole school approach to dealing with the current challenges. In particular, in supporting Continuity of Learning, school leaders will need regular engagement with their management team and their staff to be able to support pupils effectively. The support of the Continuity of Learning is an important professional contribution by teachers during this period of national challenge. The PDST Leadership Team continues to provide support and guidance to school leaders through this period.

PDST School Leadership (post-primary) provides professional learning opportunitites for practising school leaders. In our role supporting school leaders in Irish post-primary schools we offer the following programmes:

Misneach

Misneach is a programme of induction for newly-appointed principals designed to support principals and acting principals in effectively leading their schools during the first two years in the position. It empowers principals to focus on the key role of leading learning in their schools under the domains of the Quality Framework.

Tánaiste

Tánaiste is a programme of induction for newly appointed deputy principals and acting deputy principals. It offers participants support in key areas of school leadership. It examines factors which impact on the school’s learning culture drawing upon Looking at our School 2016.

Forbairt

Forbairt is a capacity building programme for experienced school leaders. It focuses on identifying and developing the leadership skills and knowledge needed to respond to identified priorities. The dynamic of Principal, Deputy Principal and Teacher Leaders working together as a team promotes the development of distributed and middle leadership which is a key element of Goal 3 of the Action Plan for Education. The Action Learning Networks promote cluster building between schools

Comhar: Middle Leaders Programme

The PDST Middle Leadership programme consists of a series of leadership development workshops for Middle Leadership (Assistant Principal I and Assistant Principal II) for both primary and post-primary schools.

Líonra

Líonraí are affiliation networks for Deputy Principals which promote personal as well as group development. Sessions explore current leadership issues, facilitate professional learning and share good practice. They also develop the tenets of distributed leadership as envisaged in the Action Plan for Education.

The PDST Leadership team use the Leadership and Management Domain in Looking at Our School (2016) to gauge the most appropriate supports and experiences needed to advance the skillsets of school leaders. This framework allows for professional reflection and will underpin professional development into the future.

Also informing all our programmes are five key principles of leadership, developed by Irish school leaders in 2005:

Additional Personal Support

Our experienced PDST school leadership team offers personalised support to principals as professional challenges arise in their own school context or in the areas of staff development and performance issues. Assistance is also provided to promote school development planning with particular reference to the organisational policies.

The PDST School Leadership team wishes you every success in your work and looks forward to meeting many of you on our programmes in the coming year.
