School Based Resources

Literacy and Numeracy for Learning and Life, The National Strategy to Improve Literacy and Numeracy in Children and Young People is a ten year strategy covering Preschool through to Post Primary school. It has implications for all members of the school community.  To assist schools in exploring the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy and it's implications, some resources have been provided here.

Chapter 3 in the strategy focuses on parents and the community. It states that engagement with parents should be a core part of the literacy and numeracy plans of schools. Ensuring the message about the importance of parental involvement gets through to parents and the wider community is essential for educational success. All parents need to be aware of the relevance of literacy and numeracy for their children’s future and the influence that they have over their children’s educational development. To this end a presentation for parents, which can be adapted to each school's context, is available below.
Teachers, principals and boards of management in effective schools use assessment information, including information about literacy and numeracy, to inform their school self-evaluation, reflective practices and their school improvement plans. They use the data to identify priorities for their development including changes they may wish to make in teaching approaches, their priorities for staff development and for the acquisition of resources. They also use assessment information as part of their monitoring of the effectiveness or otherwise of the initiatives that they put in place to improve students’ learning. The presentations for staff provided below may assist school leaders in engaging their staff with the self-evaluation process, including setting 'realistic but demanding targets' and action planning for how these targets will be achieved. The presentation on Introducing the L&N Strategy at a staff meeting may also be used with parents and/or Boards of Management.

The Forbairt Post-Primary "Action learning network newsletter" below reflects on some of the school-based projects that have been undertaken to support and  improve teaching and learning in schools.
All presentations below can be downloaded and amended to meet the needs and contexts of each individual school.
