Senior Cycle Music - CPD Resources

SCOILNET RESOURCES

Soundtrap and Digital Audio Technology in a Real Classroom (PDST Music)

This compilation consists of 11 PDST Music resources from the Spring 2022 workshops. It is a step-by-step approach to supporting our Music students' composing, performing and listening activities through the use of a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW).

The 11 individual video clips focus on a DAW called Soundtrap. This is the suggested viewing order:

  1. How to set up a Soundtrap account.
  2. Finding your way around Soundtrap.
  3. How to import and edit an mp3 in Soundtrap.
  4. Creating a backing track using Soundtrap.
  5. How to export an mp3 and collaborate on a project using Soundtrap.
  6. How a Soundtrap account looks in a web-based browser.
  7. How a Soundtrap account looks on the Soundtrap app for phones.
  8. Making a podcast in Soundtrap.
  9. Making a radio programme in Soundtrap.
  10. How to edit audio in Soundtrap: Ideas for set works and for creating audio clips for use in exams.
  11. Composing and remixing with Soundtrap at Senior Cycle.

Using ‘Soundtrap’ to Support Singing

  • Currently (Autumn 2021), singing can only be done in short time-spans. The warm-ups and rounds suggested here are a good way to prepare the voice and get the students singing.
  • The music software,'Soundtrap', makes recordings sound very professional.
  • A basic introduction to the software is provided.
  • The examples show how singers can be recorded either individually or in small groups and then hear themselves participate in a full choir sound, albeit via the computer.
  • The ideas are suitable for all age cohorts.

Remixing in ‘Soundtrap’

  • Remixing can act as a flexible framework for broader learning outcomes.
  • Remixing, or rearranging familiar songs, allows students to insert themselves into the life and narrative of the music they already love. This, in turn, accesses their individual creativity in a very real way.
  • With remixing as an approach to composition, you could have any musical element at the focus of your lessons at any particular time.
  • This attached resource, including a suggested scheme of work for undertaking a remixing project, deals with an array of elements such as timbre, tempo, rhythm, harmony, melody and music production.
  • The presentation, using the medium of ‘Soundtrap’, is aimed at both TY and Senior Cycle Music students who wish to discover how to make recordings of their own music.

Composing with Found Sounds at Senior Cycle

  • This resource suits students who have completed JC Music as well as students who have not studied Music previously. It gives them an insight into found sound composing.
  • It demonstrates a soundscape in 'Soundtrap' and a beat-based piece in 'Audacity'
  • It could be the first stepping stone to electroacoustic composing (e.g., for the LC composing elective).
  • Some listening activities and links to the found sounds repertoire are included.
  • This resource is in 'Book Creator' format and may be read online.
