SUPPORTING WELLBEING: Considerations for School Leadership teams

Do not underestimate the importance of clarity of messaging in relation to the COVID 19

 

Remember that the messaging in relation to COVID 19 is the responsibility of the various Government agencies who support in this area. 

  • ​The guidance from the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) provides useful advice to schools and parents in supporting students in talking about COVID 19 (NEPS Website)

 

Supporting well-being of staff and community

  • Celebrate small steps; acknowledge and affirm good practice in a difficult situation
  • Supporting  well-being amongst the school community

  • The importance of supporting flexibility in learning in this area

  • Supporting the well-being of the school leader
  • Consider the importance of your critical incident plan that may need to put in place in the event of negative outcomes for some families or staff in the school.

  • Ensure that all stakeholders in critical incident space are aware of their roles.

 

To ensure the area of safe and ethical use of the internet is addressed in the context of the whole-school approach to wellbeing. Further advice relating to internet safety is available on Webwise an internet safety initiative focused on raising awareness of online safety issues and good practice among pupils/students, parents and teachers. It is funded by the Department of Education and the EU Safer Internet Programme and managed by the PDST (Technology in Education). A range of support, guidance and education resources for schools, teachers, parents and pupils/students is available from Webwise. Supporting the well-being of staff

● Celebrate small steps; acknowledge and affirm good practice in a challenging situation

● Provide confidential communication lines to staff to allow them to communicate with school leadership if necessary

● Consider the benefits of formal and informal communications with staff.

● Make staff aware of the supports available to them, including the Employee Assistance and Wellbeing Programme website and NEPS website

● Use the Teacher Wellbeing section of the PDST site here as a guide and support

Supporting well-being amongst the school community

● Consider the capacity of the school to provide clarity of message and to amplify national messages at a local level that support the wellbeing of the community. The HSE website is particularly useful here.

● Where appropriate the school may be able to inform the school community of local developments in the current situation.

Supporting the well-being of the school leaders

● Maintain and develop existing leadership team networks within the school

● The PDST website has specific wellbeing supports for teachers here

● Maintain contact with existing teacher leader networks outside the school, including PDST,CSL,NAPD, PDA etc..

● Keep a monitor on work/life balances in the context of working from home. Note the benefits of having a designated workspace which separates work life and home life where possible
