Infants – Second
- Cover all strands and strand units in the Geography Curriculum. Teachers do not have to cover all the content objectives; however, it is expected that a broad range of objectives are covered.
- Science and Geography share the same strand - Environmental Awareness and Care.
- From Infants to Second the content is also the same, these should be integrated. This area links well to the Green Schools.
- The strand unit: Living in the local community, within the strand Human environment looks at our locality under different headings or sub units. You can study each of the sub units each year or split over two years, once the child experiences all of them by the time they progress from Infants/First and Second.
Third – Sixth
- Cover all strands and strand units in the Geography Curriculum. Teachers do not have to cover all the content objectives; however, it is expected that a broad range of objectives are covered.
- From Third – Sixth each class must undertake:
- A Local Study (study of the Local Area under the sub units of the strand unit)
- People living and working in the local area)
- A study of a contrasting part of Ireland
- A study of 1 European Country
- A study of 1 Non-European Country
Teachers in these classes should plan and choose locations together. These choices must be recorded as part of your whole school plan. It is advisable to link the European and Non European Countries to choices made within the History menu curriculum e.g. if you are studying The Egyptians, teachers should consider choosing Egypt as their Non-European country.
